Born in 1984, Cape Town’s DJ Rory began his professional audio career in 2002 doing sound engineering. He built a home studio, where he recorded his brother’s band and started producing his own beats while rapping his own rhymes. He always aspired to showcase his talent at live shows, and did so at Gandalfs. This is where he was drawn into the DJ scene, as Rory saw DJing as a springboard to public performance, where he could test his own tracks on audiences.
From there, he quickly acquired more residencies in the alternative scene, including places like Mercury and Fiction. There was pressure to keep expanding his genres, and Rory started loving the alternative, rock, and metal artists, and discovered the classics, pop, and dance scenes. He was forced to play diverse mixes for diverse crowds, and quickly flourished.
Friends and family began asking Rory to DJ at their functions – weddings and birthdays – and things snowballed from there. Mobile DJ gigs poured in, and Rory further honed his diverse taste in music. He has kept crowds dancing at weddings, barn dances, 18ths, 70ths, and everything in between.
Some of his artist influences include the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Neil Diamond, Bob Marley, the Eagles, Michael Jackson, Queen, A-ha, Billie Idol, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, Depeche Mode, Guns n Roses, Joe Cocker, Sting, UB40, Blink 182, Green Day, Dr Dre, Eminem, Fatboy Slim, the Notorious BIG, the Black Eyed Peas, Cypress Hill, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Avicii, the Chainsmokers, Justin Timberlake, and many more.
Rory works with the client to gauge what music they want, and prepares and manages his sets appropriately. His goal is to keep the majority of people on the dance floor at all times.
